Hiatus Interuptus

January 5th, 2008

After a break of one year and one week, I am once again in the mood to resume writing here again. I stopped because I felt blogging about our life before, during and after our emigration from the UK was becoming a chore. I was tired of feeling guilty when folks asked when I was writing the next ‘episode’ or how I came up with the stories. I just wanted to do be able to do things without some small part of me feeling that I should be writing about it.

Similarly, bignoseduglyguy, my other long running blog has run out of steam and begun to ramble incoherently over the last year. Having revolved around geekery and online activities for a good few years, it suffered when I no longer bought the latest gadgets and work/emigration left little time for distractions.

A month or so back, I referred a colleague and fellow émigré to a post here so that he could read about something that had come up in conversation. Sometime later, he mentioned how much he had enjoyed reading the posts and how it had offered him a different perspective on who I was. Over the Christmas break, I have found myself re-examining my motives, thinking about the positive comments I have received about my blogs and the enjoyment I derived from writing them.

As result of all this, I decided to give Looking for No.8 wire a new lease of life and the primary focus of my blogging activity. I have moved it away from its old sub-domain home and Blogger API to join my food and recipe blog here on WordPress. A new theme with one of my own photos as a header image and a revised byline provide what I think is a fresh look. That’s it for now though I’m sure I’ll be tinkering with a few cosmetic tweaks and adding more links over the next few days.

Compact Calendar 2008: New Zealand version

October 13th, 2007
I am currently juggling a large number of work, training and coaching commitments and will continue to do so over the next year. In order to bring some clarity to the conflicting demands and give myself half a chance of delivering the right thing at the right time, I turned to my own localised version of David Seah’s Excel-based Compact Calendar to map out the months to come. As my current compact calendar only runs for another two and a half months, this week seemed the right time to set to and create the NZ Compact Calendar for 2008 to join to the other localised versions and productivity tools on David’s site.

bignoseduglyguy – now available on Tumblr & Plum

July 6th, 2007

Life is full and busy at this time so I’m having a rest from ‘proper’ blogging for a while.
However, you can find traces of what I’m up to and interested elsewhere.  I’m slow building a collection of web pages, photos and other stuff over on my Plum page and pretending not to blog on Tumblr.

Big Boy’s Brunch

May 6th, 2007

One of the reasons things have gone quiet here is because I have finally got around to doing something I have wanted to do for a while; blog about food.

Big Boy’s Brunch is a joint venture with my good friend and pizzeria owner Kevin – a place to share recipes of our own, comment on dishes we have found elsewhere on the web and report on cookbook meals we have tried.

If you like food, pop over and have a look.

Keep it All in Balance – another post by Ian that sums it all up nicely for me.

You can’t have your kayak and eat it

That’ll teach me to be less than specific when asking for a birthday present. Having said that, SWMBO’s brilliant cake was a great consolation prize, as was the slap up dinner we had with our new friends at the restaurant at the end of our road.

NZ 4th best place in world to live

February 4th, 2007

NZ is the fourth-best place in world to live according to the The International Living travel website.  This sounded great until I read that the first three are a strange mix of France, the Netherlands and Australia.  Closer inspection shows the site to be seemingly geared towards the U.S. expat executive market. [The pointed comments around how hard it is for U.S. citizens to get into New Zealand and secure residency struck me as a bit rich given the Bush administration’s foreign and immigration policies, not to mention the generally appalling attitude of Immigration and Homeland Security drones at U.S. airports.]

Elsewhere, it would seem that the recent The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report Climate Change 2007 indicates that NZ may escape the worst impacts of global warming, according to NIWA climate scientist Jim Renwick, who contributed to the report and Climate Change Minister David Parker.

Is it warm enough yet, Mr Bush?

February 4th, 2007

+2.4°: Coral reefs almost extinct
+3.4°: Rainforest turns to desert
+4.4°: Melting ice caps displace millions
+5.4°: Sea levels rise by five metres
+6.4°: Most of life is exterminated

Following the this week’s UN report, the UK’s Independent newspaper is carrying a piece called Global warming: the final warning. This clearly spells out what the planet’s population can expect by the year 2100 in terms that even a child can understand, which may just account for the fact that Bush and his Australian counterpart, Howard, suddenly seem to realise that they’re having to loosen their collars and ties a little more often these days.

If you don’t think global warming has anything to do with you, your friends, your family or, most importantly, your kids, just spend the next 50 seconds thinking about what the five statements above will really mean for them and their kids.

With four kids myself, I can’t stop thinking about it.
