{"id":333,"date":"2006-12-13T21:29:56","date_gmt":"2006-12-13T08:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/?p=333"},"modified":"2010-12-31T10:59:53","modified_gmt":"2010-12-30T21:59:53","slug":"role-plays-and-road-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/?p=333","title":{"rendered":"Role plays and road works"},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/12\/IMG_1926_400x300.shkl.JPG\" \/><\/div>\n<p>In the last two days, I have done around 200kms of very boring commuting in order to attend a training course; the view above shows the lightest traffic I experienced as a drove home just ahead of the afternoon rush hour through Auckland&#8217;s newly completed central junction.&nbsp; To numb the boredom, I often listen to podcast and one of my favourites is Jack Thurston&#8217;s The Bike Show.&nbsp; This is always a superb blend of bikes, artistic musings, philosophy and news from the cycling scene.&nbsp; The down side is that I am all too rudely reminded that my commutes used to be <a href=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/?p=237\">oh-so-different<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the training was interesting and offered an opportunity to learn and get qualified in a new area.&nbsp; The course was a two-day workshop around NZ&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/nrfa.fire.org.nz\/projects\/cims\/index.htm\">Co-ordinated Incident Management Systems<\/a>, training folks from the emergency services, health sector, utilities and other key agencies to manage natural disasters, industrial accidents, large scale events and environmental incidents in a cohesive, collaborative and co-ordinated fashion under one encompassing system.&nbsp; By means of classroom instruction and multiple role-played real-time scenarios, we were trained to manage the &#8216;big picture&#8217; of such incidents and co-ordinate the disparate agencies involved. <\/p>\n<p>All the scenarios were based of real incidents and the directing staff included civil defense staff, fire fighters, police officers and a bomb disposal expert.&nbsp; Over the two days, we dealt with bomb hoaxes, oil refinery explosions,<br \/>\nrail crashes in remote mountain passes and catering fires at crowded<br \/>\nfestivals.&nbsp; I left the course this afternoon having learned a great deal, no only from the course but from my fellow students.&nbsp; Although I sincerely hope that I will not need to use these newly-acquired skills, a small part of me is intrigued to know how I would perform if I did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last two days, I have done around 200kms of very boring commuting in order to attend a training course; the view above shows the lightest traffic I experienced as a drove home just ahead of the afternoon rush hour through Auckland&#8217;s newly completed central junction.&nbsp; To numb the boredom, I often listen to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[441],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-333","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-places"],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/333","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=333"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/333\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":216893015,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/333\/revisions\/216893015"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=333"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=333"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=333"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
