Apparently he&#8217;d arrived home late this afternoon to find our new calf waiting in the yard so he was loading her to bring over to our place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0681.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_06811.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0681\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A little while later, the rumble of a farm bike and the rattle of a trailer heralded the young heifer&#8217;s arrival. \u00a0Immediately, we could see how bright, lively, inquisitive and nervous this little Jersey\/Fresian cross was &#8211; a very different story from poor Willow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0673.JPG\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0673.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0673\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had only just got her coat on and moved her into the paddock when Maisie and Robyn came home from school. \u00a0As they came up the drive, we could see their faces light up. After lightening quick change from school uniform, they joined us in the paddock and had the honour of giving the calf her first bottle feed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0685.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0685.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0685\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At some point during the feeding, the calf was named TJ &#8211; the initials of Maisie&#8217;s last and much-loved primary school teacher who recently died of cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0677.JPG\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0677.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0677\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>TJ\u00a0quickly\u00a0drank the two litres of milk and began the tentative process of getting acquainted with Poppy the lamb and the chooks with whom she&#8217;ll be sharing the home paddock for the next while.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"IMG_0686.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/bignoseduglyguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/IMG_0686.jpg\" alt=\"IMG 0686\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, as of this evening, our growing livestock register stands at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One lamb<\/li>\n<li>One heifer<\/li>\n<li>One rooster<\/li>\n<li>Three laying chickens<\/li>\n<li>Five day-old chicks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been considering at least one more lamb and really, around here, who knows what tomorrow will bring or when we&#8217;ll gifted another blessing to steward?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No sooner were the chicks installed in the laundry than we got a call from Johnny.
