Just wolfing down my packed lunch after a lunchtime run with a colleague.  Though not particularly long or hard, this was my first run in about 18 months so the warm post-exercise glow of smugness and achievement is surpassed only by the cramp in my legs.

Any thoughts I might entertain about moaning over sore muscles and an expanding waistline are banished by thinking about Dick and Rick Hoyt.   I was reminded of their incredible story again last night when my second eldest, recently returned from the BYM Leadership weekend, showed me a video of their achievements.

Rick was once asked, if he could give his father one thing, what would it be? Rick responded, “The thing I’d most like is for my dad to sit in the chair and I would push him for once.”

A clearer example of love between father and son I can’t imagine.

After three days of convincing football, New Zealand’s Junior Football Ferns have secured Oceania’s sole qualification spot for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany in 2010.  Postponed in October 2009 as a sign of respect for the loss of life in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, the tournament was a showcase of the Oceania talent we can expect to see playing in the next few years at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Football Tournament.  Click either photo for more shots from the weekend’s games.

New Zealand are through to the World Cup!  The goalkeeper of the family and I joined her team at a team mates place up the valley for a pot luck dinner before watching the match together.

Bahrain gave some opposition and displayed their talent for acting in the first half.  However, Rory Fallon’s rocketing header just before half time and Mark Paston’s save of the questionable penalty were stellar!  Despite the temptation to fall back and defend which seemed likely early in the second half, the All Whites licked it up a notch in the last 20 minutes with several attacking raids and a few shots on goal.

I confidently predict there will be no beer left in New Zealand by morning!
